SUPREME COURT RULING ON THE 2010 EQUALITY ACT: A STATEMENT FROM WOMEN IN FOOTBALL

Women in Football was founded in 2007 to campaign for gender equality across the football industry. We have naturally welcomed the recent boom in the popularity of competitive women’s football, but our remit has always been much wider.

The infrastructure of professional football depends on a workforce that includes thousands of women in myriad roles: agents, administrators, coaches, commentators, content creators, match officials, academy managers, physios, finance directors and many more.

Creating gender-equal conditions for that workforce needs support from all corners of the game. As an inclusive organisation committed to that goal, WIF has always welcomed members of all genders and gender expressions.

We recognise that the recent ruling by the UK’s Supreme Court, the subsequent interim guidance issued by the Equality & Human Rights Commission, and the public discourse surrounding them, are a cause of distress and uncertainty for trans people.

We urge all those involved in football to play their part in making it a place of unity and joy which is welcoming to all.
