Employment Type: Full Time
Location: England - Nationwide
Workplace type: Hybrid
Compensation: £60,000 - £70,000 / year
Reporting To: HR Director
Documents: Spec - hrbp.pdf
You’re an experienced HR professional who enjoys being close to the day-to-day work but also wants the opportunity to shape what comes next. This could be a genuinely interesting move for you.
Partnering closely with the HR Director, you’ll lead the day-to-day HR service, manage and develop two HR Executives and provide trusted, practical advice to directors and managers across the organisation.
There are good foundations in place, but also plenty of scope for you to bring greater structure, consistency and forward planning. You’ll be able to make the role your own, develop your team and contribute to talent, organisational development and wider people priorities from the outset.
As the HR function continues to develop, there is genuine potential for you to take on more strategic responsibility, gain greater exposure to senior leadership and step up in the HR Director’s absence.
What you’ll be doing
Leading complex employee relations and performance matters with confidence, fairness and good judgement
Coaching and supporting managers to handle people matters more effectively
Managing and developing two HR Executives, setting clear priorities and helping them grow in confidence
Leading the annual HR cycle, including objectives, performance reviews and development planning
Overseeing core HR operations, systems, reporting, payroll, pensions and benefits activity
Strengthening talent, succession and management development
Improving HR processes and ways of working
Deputising as the senior HR contact when the HR Director is unavailable
What you’ll bring
You’ll have substantial experience as an HR Business Partner or senior HR generalist, with strong knowledge of UK employment law and extensive experience of complex employee relations.
You’ll be comfortable advising and constructively challenging senior leaders, developing managers and leading an HR team. You’ll also be able to balance immediate operational demands with planned work and longer-term improvements.
Experience within football isn’t essential, although experience in sport, media or another high-profile, regulated or reputation-sensitive environment would be useful. A CIPD qualification, or progress towards one, would also be welcome.
This is a home-based role, but it isn’t fully remote. You’ll need to travel to the London office, and other business locations when required, and because of this we would prefer candidates to live within a one hour commute of London. Business travel expenses to the office and other locations will be funded by the Pro Ref in line with their expenses policy.
What you’ll receive
8% employer pension contribution when you contribute 4%
Bupa private medical insurance after probation plus four times salary life assurance and Group Income Protection
Annual leave allowance of 25 days plus Bank Holidays
A discretionary, non-contractual annual bonus equivalent to 5% of salary, linked to agreed KPIs
Care First Employee Assistance Programme and the Aviva DigiCare+ health and wellbeing app
Access to the Wellhub fitness and wellbeing platform after probation
The option to swap up to two UK bank holidays for personally meaningful days
Access to the EV car scheme after one year’s service, subject to eligibility

Reporting To: Human Resources Business Partner
You’re an experienced payroll professional who takes pride in getting the detail right, meeting every deadline and being someone others can rely on when payroll questions arise. You’d also like the opportunity to broaden your role across reporting, pensions, benefits and HR operations.
Payroll will account for at least half of your role, and you’ll take ownership of the end-to-end monthly process. You’ll become the payroll subject expert within the HR team, making sure employees and workers are paid accurately and on time, queries are handled calmly and reporting provides reliable information.
The wider role will give you the opportunity to build your experience across pensions, employee benefits, HR systems and general HR operations. There’s also real scope for you to improve reporting, strengthen processes and take broader ownership as your knowledge of the organisation develops.
What you’ll be doing
Managing the end-to-end monthly payroll process, from gathering and checking information through to final approval and submission
Preparing payroll reports and reconciliations, investigating discrepancies and resolving issues
Responding to questions about pay, tax and deductions, using your knowledge of PAYE and HMRC requirements
Maintaining accurate employee and worker information across payroll, SAP and other HR records
Producing routine and ad hoc reports and identifying ways to improve the quality and use of HR and payroll data
Supporting the administration of pensions and employee benefits
Working confidently with payroll contacts, pension and benefit providers and other external partners
Supporting wider HR administration and employee lifecycle activity
Documenting and improving key processes to make them more accurate, consistent and efficient
What you’ll bring
You’ll need strong payroll experience, including significant responsibility for an end-to-end payroll process, along with sound knowledge of PAYE and payroll-related HMRC requirements.
Accuracy and attention to detail will be critical, as will your ability to work confidently with reports, reconciliations and detailed data. You’ll have good Excel skills and be comfortable creating meaningful reports rather than simply extracting information from a system.
You’ll be calm, resilient and customer-focused, with the confidence to deal with sensitive pay queries and work with colleagues and external stakeholders.
Practical experience of pensions and employee benefits administration will be useful, although payroll remains the priority. SAP experience is strongly preferred but isn’t essential if you’ve used a comparable payroll or HR system. Wider HR operations experience would also be welcome.
Experience within football isn’t essential, although experience in sport or another high-profile, fast-paced or regulated environment would be useful.
This is a home-based role, but it isn’t fully remote. During your onboarding, you’ll be expected to attend the London office and other business locations around twice a week. Once you’re established, this is likely to reduce to around twice a month, with flexibility to attend more often when the role requires it. Because of this we would prefer candidates to live within a one hour commute of London. Business travel expenses to the office and other locations will be funded by the Pro Ref in line with their expenses policy.
What you’ll receive
8% employer pension contribution when you contribute 4%
